Manor, Texas
13 miles east of Austin is central Texas’ organic produce pioneer Tecolote Farm. Sitting on 65 acres of rich Blackland Prairie soil, Tecolote Farm is the longest operating organic CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) in Texas. It is also a rainwater-harvesting solar powered organic farm. It’s actually the first CSA in Texas and first farm in the greater Austin area to be 100% solar powered.
Having a small footprint and relatively small operation, the Tecolote Farm solar PV system needed to only be 14.0kW. The system is made up of 56 Hanwha 250W solar panels roof-mounted on their barn, supplying all of the power needed for their three walk-in coolers (their largest energy requirement). Their produce is never more than 24 hours old, so they use a three-stage cooling system to chill their vegetables to ensure they are the freshest when they are delivered to the customer.
